Braidology: The Art & Skill of Braiding for Empowerment

Overview:

The Walker Foundation presents Braidology, a hands-on braiding training program designed to teach the fundamentals and advanced techniques of hair braiding. This program empowers participants by offering vocational skills, cultural education, and entrepreneurial insight.

Goals:

Teach professional braiding techniques (basic to advanced)b

Preserve and celebrate African and African-American hair culture

Foster entrepreneurship in the beauty and cosmetology industry

Support youth and young adults with employable skills

Target Audience:

Youth ages 13–25

Aspiring hairstylists or beauty professionals

Individuals interested in self-employment or beauty services

Program Details:

📍 Location:
The Walker Foundation KC Training Center or Partner Community Center

📅 Duration:
4-week training (Saturdays only or Weekday evenings)

🕒 Schedule:

Week 1: Introduction to Hair & Braiding History + Basic Techniques

Week 2: Parting, Feed-in Braids, Cornrows, Knotless Braids

Week 3: Box Braids, Stitch Braids, Tribal Styles, and Updos

Week 4: Sanitation, Product Knowledge, Client Care & Business 101


🎓 Certification:
Each participant receives a Braidology Certificate of Completion upon finishing the course.

Materials Provided:

Braiding mannequins

Combs, clips, and hair tools

Braiding hair and product samples

Training manual

Branded apron & t-shirt

Partnership Opportunities:

The Walker Foundation will partner with:

Local beauty schools and stylists

Hair product companies for sponsorship
